If you used a DVI-to-HDMI adapter to connect the display, DVI does not carry an audio signal. To hear sound through the display, you must connect the computer Audio Line Out connector to the DVI Audio In connector on the display and select DVI as the source. Do not select HDMI as the default audio device in Windows. my laptop didn't give hdmi as a playback option. it did show my tv, but putting it to default didn't help, and my tv manual simply said to use audio from your computer. so just when i gave up hope after hours of following different tips on the internet, i searched download hdmi audio sound driver for windows 8 and here i am, finally getting the sound i wanted. i barely know what any of this means, i'm just glad there was a simple solution after all
